SGO Orgelconcours 2019

Stichting Groningen Orgelland (SGO) is organising the SGO Organ Competition for the 32nd time, aimed at amateur players and organ students. The competition has three different categories.

If you’re studying the organ at the conservatoire, or you’re just about to start your organ studies -or if you’ve played the organ for years to a high standard- and you’d like to demonstrate your talent and experience to a professional jury and an interested and enthusiastic audience, then the SGO Organ Competition is the place for you!

For the last 50 years the SGO has championed the organs of Groningen. One of the ways in which the foundation does this, is by encouraging young people and amateur players of all ages to take up professional organ lessons in order to perform at the highest possible level – with the aim of creating new generations of organists to play the many beautiful organs which Groningen city and province possess. This aim has been achieved year on year! Participation in the SGO Organ Competition has allowed many organists to make a name for themselves far beyond the Netherlands.
Will this year’s organists achieve the same? The chances are high, because in this anniversary year the SGO certainly isn’t doing things by halves. The 32nd Organ Competition will be held on no less than four of Groningen city’s organs.
Members of the public in the audience are more than welcome, both in the qualifying rounds (between 09:00am and 15:00pm) and for the final, which will take place at 19:30pm.

Taking part in the competition
There are three categories, and in each category there are a maximum of 20 participants allowed. Each participant has a maximum of ten minutes’ playing time. In the qualifying rounds, three candidates are determined per category for the final, and one winner per category will receive the category prize.

Category 1
Participants aged 25 and under who on 1 September 2019 have not yet started with studies at a conservatoire.
The qualifying rounds will be held from 09:00am – 15:00pm on the Timpe organ in the Nieuwe Kerk.
Jury: Leonore Lub, Sietze de Vries and Erwin Wiersinga
Category 2
Conservatoire students.
The qualifying rounds will be held from 09:00am – 15:00pm on the Schnitger organ in the Der Aa-kerk.
Jury: Vincent van Laar, Jelte Hulzebos and Peter Westerbrink.
Category 3
Amateur players over the age of 25.
The qualifying rounds will be held from 09:00am – 15:00pm on the Edskes-Schnitger organ in the Lutherse Kerk.
Jury: Tymen Jan Bronda, Stef Tuinstra and Henk de Vries.

The nine finalists will each play their programme again from 19:30pm onwards in the Martinikerk. The full jury led by its chair Theo Jellema will decide the first, second and third places in this prestigious anniversary competition.
Candidates will each have an hour and a half practice time on the organ for their category in the week of the competition. The finalists will each have half an hour from 15:30pm on Saturday 12 October to acquaint themselves with the Martinikerk organ.
